In sport the term 'great' is distributed liberally, attached to single performances as well as to consistent performers. Most people agree that greatness is a function of longevity; many are convinced that a single performance (eg. Bob Beamon's long jump at the Mexico Olympics) meets the criterion. Great performers give their heart to the sport.

Anil Kumble qualifies as a great on all these counts: an 18-year career, and the Test bowler's Holy Grail, all ten wickets in an innings. His tally of 619 Test wickets is topped only by two bowlers. But it is the mixture he contains that makes him fascinating: toughness and dignity; self assurance and empathy; the ability to focus on the details and understand the big picture simultaneously; an awareness of the meaning of his sport and the suppleness to adapt. He is an old-fashioned cricketer in modern garb. Anyone searching for the abstract qualities unique to the game - fairness, spirit, gentlemanliness - need not look beyond Kumble.

Kumble has varied interests. This book brings together his passion for cricket, wildlife conservation and photography. It gives us a glimpse into the lives of his contemporaries beyond the boundary, and our wild animals within theirs. Kumble travelled with a cricket ball in one hand and a camera in the other, so to speak. His exploits with the former are well known. Here are his exploits with the latter.
